Sanctuary Cities

Senator Barack Obama
Senator John McCain

Summary

•For the sanctuary city issue to be resolved there must be comprehensive immigration reform

Summary

• Americans are deeply skeptical about the ability of politicians to solve the immigration issue
• Enforcement will come first
• There will be no sanctuary cities

MR. RUSSERT:
But you would allow the sanctuary cities to exist?

SENATOR OBAMA:
What I would do as president is pass comprehensive immigration reform. And the federal government should be doing, which is controlling our borders but also providing a rational immigration system, which we currently don't have.

"We said we'd enforce the borders. The American people didn't believe us... I want to ensure you that I will enforce the borders first and as president of the United States we'll solve this immigration problem. And we won't demagogue it. And we won't have sanctuary cities. And we won't have all this other rhetoric that, unfortunately, contributes nothing to the national dialogue."
